"Founded by German architect Walter Gropius in 1919, the Bauhaus stood for a utopian craft fellowship mixing sculpture, architecture and painting into a single innovative expression. Its practices fused elements of design education with fine arts, utilizing the understanding of color theory and materials through metalworkng, weaving, cabinetmaking, pottery etc. Gropius' mission was to unify the arts through crafts, which elements of this proved to be financially unfeasible. As a result he changed the tactics in 1923 to highlight the importance of mass production while keeping the emphasis on craft.
