Directoire Period Antique Cherrywood "Fauteuil" (Armchair), France circa 1795
A Directoire period cherrywood antique "fauteuil" (French for armchair) with hand carved details from France c. 1795 with fresh upholstery and interesting nail head trim. The decorative horizontal band along the upper back of this antique French armchair features a neoclassical motif that fits within the slightly curved shape. The main theme is the everlasting knot that consists of a single line carved by hand to weave over and under in order to appear as though it is one continuous strand. Enclosed within each of the five circles is a raised square that gives an angular contrast to the circular shapes. The knot is flanked by a diamond shaped lozenge on the left and right again deeply carved to achieve maximum visual impact. The actual chair rail is topped with an overhang just slightly wider than the curve of the back to give each chair a slightly architectural flavor. Where the arms join the back there is a slightly raised curve embellished with a palm leaf detail that reappears beneath the end of the arm carved into the front leg. The slender taper of the front legs gives the chair an elegant profile when seen from any direction. This French antique armchair has been freshly upholstered with a unique nail head trim.
