Pair of Painted Louis XVI Style Bergeres, France circa 1900
The grand scale of this pair of Louis XVI style French bergeres makes them supremely comfortable. The slant of the back and the depth and width of the seat are generous in proportion and well cushioned. Originally known as "bergères aux oreilles" literally translated as "chairs with ears" because of the large wings and padded arms and sides designed to keep the chill breezes away from the body during the winter. The painted wooden frames of these antique French armchairs feature beautifully tailored lines with circular tapered legs enhanced with deep fluting as well as sloped arms defined by acanthus leaf carving that wraps around the front of each curved front. The bold shape of the upper upholstered sections with plush rounded forms is a handsome contrast to the painted timber and is echoed by the loose seat cushion that plumps up when shaken. This is the original upholstery and there is a flaw on the underside of one seat cushion that remains hidden unless turned over otherwise the fabric is in excellent vintage condition as is the nail head trim.
