Empire Style Cherrywood Armchair, Bronze Mounts, France, c. 1870
Empire Style Cherrywood Armchair, Bronze Mounts, France c.1870. This chair possesses a dramatic visual presence that is a combination of its architectural styling first seen during the empire period in France (1804-1830) and the beautiful cherrywood timber that has a lustrous patina. The pair of bronze mounts placed on the left and right front legs feature a portrait of an Egyptian Pharaoh that was an especially favorite motif used during the nineteenth century because of its reference to an earlier and splendid age. Napoleon I, the Emperor of France during which the Empire style developed, sought to incorporate the luster of earlier rulers to solidify his standing politically as he possessed no hereditary claim to the the throne. The profile of the chair has a distinctly throne like appearance with its raised arms, solidly square tapered front legs and elegantly rounded back. No matter from which direction this chair is viewed (and it was always designed to be seen fully in the round) it has a beauty that is quite unique.
