Pair Antique George I Style English Walnut Armchairs, Eagle Head circa 1890

A pair of antique burl walnut and walnut English armchairs featuring a well carved eagle head at the end of each arm circa 1890. Please notice the elegant inspiration of the Queen Anne period (1710-1714) that has given these chairs an unusually powerful presence. By using the zoom feature the wonderful carving that is on the back, arms and front legs of the chairs may be easily seen and appreciated in its full beauty. The centrepiece of the back of the chairs is the lovely arrangement of scrolls and flourishes that sits directly in the centre of the top of each armchair. The high relief carving used on all the decorative motifs in these chairs is of exceptional quality and adds immeasurably to their desirability as focal points in an interior. The pair of arms on each chair have a sensuous curve to them and are wide enough so an arm rests comfortable along the entire upper surface. At the outer tip of each arm is a handsomely carved head of an eagle facing outward to the left and right respectively in an eternally vigilant gaze. The eagle has always represented the height of power amongst the aristocracy for its far reaching gaze and range and is perhaps most familiar from the double headed eagle used in both the Hapsburg and Russian Imperial families. The realistic rendering of the avian portrait head depicts the head with a large beak and eyes as well as a back of overlapping feathers. The lower section of each arm where they connect with the chair seat also is highlighted with a bold scroll and a luscious pattern of flourishes that sweep up the arm. The front legs of each chair also show a keen awareness on the part of the carver as to balance and symmetry. The top of each leg is the wider point and the broad area is filled with a series of three dimensional patterns that echo what is seen at the top of the chairs. The stylized shells and the descending series of bell flowers are set at the top and centre and are framed by a single line of raised carving that crosses in a charming loop at the base before it ascends and spreads to the sides where it frames the entire leg in a boldly shaped scroll. As each leg reaches the floor it becomes more slender until it reaches the floor to terminate in a stacked pad foot of circular shape. The upper area of the pad foot is adorned with a raised carving of leafy flourishes that move in a balanced fashion across the foot. The beautiful pale belgian linen upholstery has been freshly applied and was chosen to enhance the modern quality of these chairs. By choosing a material that focuses on texture the inherent drama of the carving becomes quite prominent on these chairs. This contrast gives a contemporary crispness and enables these chairs to be used in a variety of interior spaces where striking and comfortable seating is required.
