Pair Louis XVI Style Painted Armchairs, Leather Seats, Cane Back, France circa 1890
Pair Louis XVI Style Painted Armchairs (Fauteuils), Leather Seats, Cane Back, Belle Epoque Period, France c.1890. These elegant chairs show the refined aesthetic developed during the late eighteenth rule of Louis XVI in France (1774-1792). The slightly oval shaped back of each chair features a moulded edge on the front that encircles the woven cane. Please note that the back of each chair retains its vertical support that adds structural stability. Each seat is fully upholstered in the original leather with traces of gilt tooling that adds subtle luxury with its delicate reflective gleam. Of course all four legs have the vertical fluting that is a hallmark of Louis XVI furnishings. The slender cylindrical taper of each leg is enhanced by this carved detail of fluting that was taken directly from columns seen in the ancient classical worlds of Greece and Rome that was especially popular during the late eighteenth century. The original painted finish has worn beautifully and gives these chairs a wonderfully attractive appearance.
