Hand Forged Solid Iron Roman "Curule" Bench, Italy circa 1875
The elegant and sculptural profile of this full size antique iron bench is enhanced by the solid iron material forged by hand. Because of its simplicity this bench has a particularly modern line. The distinctive heavy weight and hammered surface of the iron are both integral elements of solid iron when it has been worked to create a piece of furniture. The form of this bench is known as "curule" taken from the Roman originals. These seats were originally reserved for persons occupying a position of power as everyone else would be required to stand. As the bench is finished on all sides it may be used in a variety of spaces where an open seating option is desired. The fabric seat has been created from a contemporary fabric with a geometric design that complements the contemporary profile. The great advantage of this bench is its ability to be seen to striking effect from every direction. No matter where it is placed the elegant sweep of the bench is entirely visible.
