Glass Leg Bench, Italy, c. 1975
Glass Leg Bench, Italy circa 1975. This unique bench features four legs made of stacked glass disks of varying diameters each retaining its original nickel mounts. The dramatic manner in which the glass legs capture and refract light because of the tapered profile of each leg is quite stunning. By stacking seven individual disks atop each other and ensuring that the middle of each legs has the greatest size the designer of the bench ensured that attention would be focused on the unusual application of what is usually considered a rather fragile material. But glass, especially thick glass, possesses quite a powerful tensile strength as their use here exhibits. The use of the nickel metal at the top and base of each leg is quite clever as the shape is that of a cone and reinforces the profile of each leg. The turquoise color of the fabric enhances the color of the glass and contributes to the modern quality of the bench.
