Antique Italian Neoclassical Walnut Chair circa 1780
The clean architectural lines of this antique Italian neoclassical walnut chair circa 1780 give it an exceptionally powerful scuptural presence. The luscious patina of the carved walnut gleams with a depth only achieved with repeated waxing and the passage of time. The back of this chair is especially intriguing as the motif consists of two intertwining ribbons that weave over and under each other to create a series of three large to small descending ovals contained within the rectangular open frame. The largest oval is at the top and forms the oval shape of the back chair rail. The incised carving is deep and distinct and allows light to create shadows accentuating the depth when it flows across the surface. All four of the legs are true squares enhanced with a tapered form containing fluted details as well as carved lozenges at each of the sections of the leg beneath the seat. Even the rear legs of this chair are embellished indicating the chair was always meant to be seen from every direction with equal appeal. The seat has been freshly upholstered in a modern graphic pattern in raised velvet chosen for its luxurious hand.
