Recamier - Fainting Couch, 19th century
A mid to late 19th century English or American Recamier or fainting couch. The legs are carved with stylized acanthus leaves, in the Neoclassical taste. The Recamier is named for Madam Recamier (1777-1849) who was famous for her salons in early 19th century Paris. The fainting couch was a staple for the homes of the fashionable. Stories abound of Victorian women in need of a piece of furniture to faint onto because of hysteria (or tight corsets) they where styled after pieces painted on ancient Greek and Roman pottery and their popularity rode the tide of Greek and Roman revival in the 19th century.
