Crafted in New York City before the Industrial Revolution and the age of mass-production furniture, this stunning solid and veneered mahogany settee serves as an elegant example of the American Empire style. This type of settee graced many an abode in the Antebellum South, where the Empire style was most vigorously embraced on this side of the Atlantic. Napoleon and his dynamite decorating duo of Percier & Fontaine spawned this classically inspired style, and not terribly surprisingly, often incorporated an array of power motifs (note the combination of eagles’ wings and lions paws for legs). With the addition of a bold new textile in the classic black & white Greek key pattern, this piece embraces both past and present.
