A Pair of Peter Krider Coin Silver Medallion Preserve Spoons
This is a gorgeous pair of coin silver preserve spoons, made by Peter Krider. Each has a greek-style medallion on the handle, containing a three-dimensional head profile. One appears to be Nike, with his winged helmet. And the other is a woman with flowing hair, presumably a greek goddess. Each medallion is impressively dimensional, as opposed to the shallow relief of most other pieces of the same style. Beautiful brite-cut work decorates the rest of each handle, culminating in a scallop edged bowl. These spoons are in excellent condition.
They each measure 7 1/4" x 1 1/2". Their combined weight is 75 grams, or 2.4 Troy ounces. The spoon with the Nike likeness has a monogram on the back of the handle: "Mary." Both spoons are marked "P.L.K."
Originally from Philadelphia, Peter Krider apprenticed with John Curry and R. & W. Wilson. He later was a journeyman for Obadiah Rich, one of Boston's leading silversmiths. In Philadelphia after starting his own shop in the 1850's he became one of Philadelphia's most important silversmiths.
