This is a lovely 800 Hanau silver tea caddy, made in Germany in the 1890s. It has a distinctive Neo-Classical design to it and emanates a regal air. The two larger sides feature the same embossed image of a woman, dressed in flowing draped attire, carving the bust of a Trojan warrior. The other two sides display a young cherub with a peacock on his arm. The whole piece is decorated with embossed panels containing medallion-like classical designs. This tea caddy is in excellent condition.
It measures 2 1/2" x 1 7/8" x 3 3/4" and weighs 172 grams. It has a very clear set of Hanau pseudo hallmarks, which have been described as amongst the "most difficult and confusing area of silver hallmark study", as the marks were never registered and no records exist. The marks include pseudo crowned leopards head, pseudo lion passant and pseudo dolphin. These can be attributed to the maker Gebruder Dingeldein.
