Egyptian Silver (900) Niello Checkerboard Cigarette Case
This is a stunning 900 silver niello cigarette case, made in Egypt in 1929. The delicate niello technique of creating black enamel designs on silver is exhibited so beautifully here in a tight checkerboard pattern. It also exhibits exquisite craftsmanship, as executing such a tight niello pattern is very hard to do. Press the push-release clasp to reveal a gilt interior. The shape of this piece is very pleasing to hold and it is on the larger side for a cigarette case. It can also be used as a wallet or clutch. It is in perfect condition with a crisp niello pattern and perfectly working hinge and clasp.
This case measures 5 1/4" x 3 1/4" 1/2" and weighs 153 grams. It bears Egyptian maker's marks as well as the "D" date mark for 1929. It also has what appears to be a german mark next to "900" silver. Perhaps it was made in Egypt for a German company. The inside of the case is monogrammed with "B.J.B. M.S.B. 5th ANIV. 3.10.42."
