Alfredo Sciarrotta Sterling Silver Triple Leaf Dish, circa 1950
This is a lovely sterling silver dish, made by acclaimed silversmith Alfredo Sciarrotta. This triple leaf form is much more rare than the individual leaf dishes by Sciarrotta. It is an excellent example of the designer's work, displaying a high quality of worksmanship, the particularly heavy sterling, and the naturalistic leaf shapes with delicately curling edges. It stands on 3 ball feet (one on the bottom of each leaf) and has a vine-like twisted loop handle in the center where the three leaves meet. This dish is in excellent condition.
The story of the silversmith Alfredo Sciarrotta is an interesting one. During World War II, he was smuggled out of Italy into the US to work on submarine technology. After the war, he settled in Newport, RI and created a small line of hand-made sterling silver hollowware. He sold these in his own shop, but other stores began to take notice and he was eventually retailed at Shreve Crump & Low, Gorham, Bailey Banks & Biddle, and Cartier. This piece has the earlier and less common hallmark that Sciarrotta used only at his own studio.
It measures 9 1/2" x 2 11/16" and weighs 319 grams, or 10.26 Troy ounces. It is marked "BLACK, STARR, & GORHAM" (where it was retailed), "HANDMADE BY SCIARROTTA," with the pattern number "31," and "STERLING."
