Vintage Sterling Silver William Spratling Pair of Salt Cellars with Spoons
A lovely pair of Salt Cellars with their corresponding spoons from the 1940's. These cellars and spoons all have the William Spratling maker's mark that dates the pieces to 1940-1944. They are highly desirable silver collection pieces but also are a great fully functioning set with a lovely art deco design that meets a mid century modern look. The spoons have a nice decorative touch of tiny silver beads on both the handle top and bottom. Each cellar is 1 3/4" across, 1 1/4" tall, spoon is 2 1/2". Total weight of silver is 77 grams, or approximately 2 troy ounces. These salt (or sugar, or even possibly spice) cellar pieces also feature the hallmarking system that was used by Spratling. This included a primary hallmark that identified Spratling as the designer of the item: the mark WS Print. And, the secondary hallmark identified the place of manufacture: Made in Mexico. In an authentic WS Print Circle mark, the letters surrounding the circle were raised while the WS in the center was incised (cut into) into the silver, as seen here. The Spratling Silver letters were raised in the oval cartouche. William Spratling moved to Taxco in 1929 and was known for his work and his famous Taller de las Delicias, where he collaborated on silver-work with many Mexican artisans. He made silver pieces until 1967. This salt cellar set is a classic design and a wonderful example of Spratling's use of Mexican Silver.
