Mid Century Modern Antonio Pineda Taxco 999 Silver Candlestick Pair
An outstanding pair of weighted silver Pineda candlesticks with an decorative circular, almost button-like pattern. These candlesticks were made in Taxco, Mexico in 1953, by Antonio Pineda, a cutting edge artist who grew up in post-revolutionary Mexico. In the early 1940s he became a renowned designer and silversmith, and set up his "taller", or workshop, in Taxco. He had many international clientele, as he has worked with the artists William Spratling and Valentine Vidauretta in Mexico City, and his sculptural silver work, his unique personal style stood out from the rest. In 1944 he exhibited his works in San Francisco at the Palace of the Legion of Honor and there he became a success, working solely for the demands of his customer base. These two column candlesticks have a strong presence, and are a fine example of the sculptural silver-work that Pineda is known for. Although they are not solid silver, their weight is impressive. From their construction we can say that they are 1/4 inch thick silver, enough to give the two pieces the column-like monumentality that they emit. Close inspection to the repeating pattern of circle forms allows one to see the hand of the artist, and the silver appears as if it were clay, hand sculpted to create organic forms. Where one sets the candle are the markings: .999 SILVER, NOT SOLID, PINEDA, TAXCO, S.A. de C.V.
The taller candle stick is 10 inches high with a 3 1/2 inch diameter; the smaller candlestick is 8 1/2 inches tall and has a diameter of 3 1/4. The opening for the candle stick is 1 3/8- 1 1/2 inches, a little larger than the standard size. They are both in great condition.
