Cellini Shop Handwrought Sterling Silver Tray
A beautiful Cellini hand-wrought, hand hammered, sterling silver tray with decorated handles that evoke berries on a stem. The Cellini Craft design is known for its organic style; Cellini's mannerist designs are simple yet also seductive. Cellini Shop was started by Ernest Gerlach in Evanston, IL, a suburb of Chicago, in 1914. Gerlach, who had trained at the Marshall Field & Company Craft Shop, named his operation after Benvenuto Cellini, the 16th Century Florentine goldsmith and mannerist sculptor. Most of the shop's early items were produced by David and Walter Mulholland, whose Mulholland Brothers shop was also in Evanston. This tray is an earlier Cellini Craft piece, when Cellini was Cellini Shop, not yet Craft in its name. This piece is a fine example of the American Arts & Crafts movement, which began producing decorative objects around the turn of the 20th Century. This particular tray, similar to early Cellini pieces has a Kalo style, a feminine hand made look, a major focus of the Arts and Crafts movement, which took center stage in Chicago. Although this is an earlier piece this design kept being made beyond the 1920s. Tray size: 7.5" x 5.5" (19 x 14 cm). Weight: 7.6 ozt.
