Sterling Silver and Enamel Dog Match Safe by Carter & Howe, circa 1900
This is a charming sterling silver and enamel match safe, made in New York, NY by Carter & Howe around 1900. It features a beautifully rendered and exquisitely detailed standing dog enameled on the front. The lid has a bail loop for hanging on a chatelaine or watch fob. Its striker is on the bottom. It is in excellent condition, aside from the fact the the lid is not completely flush to the body, although this is easily adjustable. A lovely example of enamel on sterling.
This match safe measures 2 3/8" x 1 3/8" and weighs 1 Troy ounce. It is marked "STERLING" and with an arrow mark.
