William B. Kerr & Co Sterling Silver Match Holder with Woman in Seascape
This elegant repoussé match holder features a woman in a seascape, next to a crashing wave with ornate floral scrolls, and a repeating face of a young boy cherub and older masked man. The bottom of the match holder or presentation plate has been embellished with floral and scroll pattern repoussé alongside faces that are perhaps of a mythological narrative. The nude young woman bathes in the ocean and catches the light of the sun as a crane flies over her. All the repoussé details add to the narrative of this lovely silver piece, which also has a great patina and is in wonderful condition for its age. The base of plate is marked sterling silver, makers mark William B. Kerr & Co , and the number 2069. It measures 3.5 inches tall by 5.5 inches at the base. The actual box that holds the matches is 2.25 inches by 1 inch. The match holder weighs 2 troy ounces. Its a great silver piece, and William B. Kerr & Co. was an excellent silversmith who later sold to Gorham. Kerr silver was known for its elaborate and unique Art Nouveau pieces, and often representing imagery from nursery rhymes or myths in his highly ornate reppousé work. circa 1900.
