Rare Norwegian Sterling Silver Cup from Olympic Committee 1912
A one of a kind sterling silver trophy cup honoring Fredrik "Charles" Ericksen (1875 – February 23, 1916) a Norwegian-American wrestler who competed in the 1904 Summer Olympics for the United States. In 1904 he won a gold medal in the welterweight category in the St Louis Olympics. In 1912, the year marked on this ceremonial cup he retired from the Olympic Wrestling team, which was competing in the Stockholm Summer Olympics, in Sweden. The cup has a repeating animal pattern design along the rim with detailed ornamentation that reminds one of art deco styles; the cup is slim and measures 9.5inches high by 3 inches wide at the mouth. It weights 190 grams or 6 troy ounces. It is engraved with the words: TIL MINDE OM CHAS.F.ERICKSEN/ARBEIDE FOR NORSK I DRAET 1912 ( In memory of Chas or Charles). Also, FRA/ NORGES TURN OG I DRAFTSFORBUND. The base is marked with the makers mark Kristiania.
Interestingly enough, in 2012, Norwegian historians found documentation showing that Ericksen did not receive American citizenship until 22 March 1905. The historians thus petitioned to have Ericksen's gold registered as Norwegian, and currently this is a newsworthy story. This antique cup is unique and interesting conversation piece. A great gift for someone interested in stories, history or a sports enthusiast. The cup itself is in great condition with a wonderful polish, remarkably with minimal scratches for its age.
