This is a simply stunning sterling silver calling card case.
Card cases have a rich and interesting history. In the early 19th century it was customary for ladies and gentlemen of the upper class to carry calling card or visiting card. These small paper cards would have the individual’s details, much like the modern day business card. Calling card cases were first introduced in 19th century England and soon it became protocol for women to carry a calling card. Because these objects were mainly used by women their designs were feminine in nature. Calling card cases were made from a variety of materials, including ivory, enamel, tortoiseshell and mother of pearl. The use of calling cards declined at the end of the 19th century, therefore reducing the demand and production for calling card cases. However, the small number of cases that remain intact are a beautiful reminder of a time gone by.
This piece is ornately detailed with floral engravings. The inside of the case is beautifully decorated with fine engine-turned work. The piece is also marked “M.F.A.”, for the maker’s mark, and “Sterling”, for sterling silver, on the inside of the case.
The lovely calling card case has the approximate measurements of 4 1/4” by 2 1/2”. This piece weighs approximately 67.50 grams or 2.17 troy ounces.
This piece is in excellent original condition. The hinges have a wonderful range of motion. This piece is free from dents, nicks, or any warping.
This would make an unforgettable gift or a fabulous addition to your silver collection!
