Wood & Hughes Gilt Sterling Silver Honey Comb Bowl
This bowl is a true gem. It is made by Wood & Hughes during the later years of the Aesthetic Movement, circa 1889. It is a partial gilt silver, two handed bowl with a magnificent beehive honeycomb motif, chased with a bright cut flower-like decoration on the interior of the bowl. The two outside handles have a delicate and considered daisy flower pattern, which complements the flowers on the edge, as well as the interior. The gold wash on the base interior of the bowl may be less golden as it once was but it looks magnificent today still, especially when light catches the honey comb pattern. The light staining or pitting from something once left in the bowl, as well as some light scuffing on the underside do not take away from the appearance of this silver bowl. It is marked W & H, STERLING, 138A on the underside. It measures 3-1/2 x 11-1/8 x 8-5/8 inches (8.9 x 28.3 x 21.9 cm) and weighs 16.94 troy ounces. Originally from the Collection of Dr and Mrs. Harold Eklund of Iowa. As a silver maker, Wood & Hughes became highly regarded and well known for its sterling tableware and ornamental flatware with floral, and classical motifs, as can be seen on this bowl. Wood & Hughes emerged on the silver scene in 1845 after Jacob Wood and Jasper H. Hughes broke away from the original parent company, Gale, Wood & Hughes. This bowl is really spectacular and needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. It makes an elegant serving bowl, and with its two handles can carry significant weight. A great addition to a silver collection.
