Federal furniture refers to American furniture produced in the Federal Period, which lasted from approximately 1780 to 1820. Notable furniture makers who worked in the Federal style included Duncan Phyfe and Charles-Honoré Lannuier. Characteristics of the style include geometric forms, straight and tapered legs, contrasting veneers. Common motifs included the Eagle, representative of the new Federal government, as well as shells, stars and pineapples. Woods included Maple, Cherry Walnut and Fruitwoods.
