Gustavian

The Gustavian style was ushered in by Sweden's King Gustav III and inspired by Gustav's visit to the Palace of Versailles in France. True Gustavian dates from the late 18th century to very early 19th century, and was influenced heavily by French Neo-Classicism. The well-known washes and colors are indicative of a desire for light given Sweden's long winters. Design themes included a move away from Rococo toward more restraint, with cleaner lines incorporating geometry and symmetry.
