George III Antique English Mahogany Pembroke Table circa 1820
The beauty and elegance of Georgian period furniture is on full display here in this antique English mahogany pembroke table circa 1820. The slender tapered legs with their original casters (used to move the table around an interior as needed), the shaped drop leaves and the drawer at one end are all in perfect balance and symmetry as befits Georgian aesthetic values. Each leaf, when raised, rests upon a hidden support and forms a lovely oval. When the leaves are lowered the front and far end of the top remain curved while the sides are straight. The handsome grain of the mahogany timber is always on display as mahogany is not native to England but was imported at an expense that made it a valuable material. Because the table is finished on all sides it is perfect when used to float within a room where it will be viewed from many directions.
