Painted and Carved Altar Table, Yunnan Province, China circa 1890
Painted and Carved Altar Table, Yunnan Province, China c.1890. The brilliant colours of yellow, green and red seen here correspond to specific attributes in Chinese culture as well as the Buddhist religion which spread northward from Tibet. Given the region's proximity to the mountains of the Himalayas the table embodies two design elements that give it such a striking appearance. The dramatic profile of the legs owes much to the wild mountain sheep that populate the high mountain altitudes while the distinctive pattern seen at the base of each leg at the outside is that of a stylized cloud. The colour red has always been associated with good luck and fortune and is used frequently in both outside and inside decoration. The shade of green seen on the apron is associated with health and prosperity and is also considered an auspicious sign. Yellow, used to great effect in the table, is the colour considered to be the most beautiful and prestigious. The Chinese have a saying, "Yellow creates Yin and Yang" implying that yellow is the centre of everything. Yellow also symbolizes the freedom from worldly care and worry so is especially esteemed in Buddhism. The broad front legs are joined to the flat back legs by horizontal stretchers while the front legs are joined by a shaped stretcher and decorated with the same gorgeous yellow colour as the legs.
