Pair of Painted Gustavian Console Tables, Sweden circa 1880
The elegant carving on this pair of Swedish console tables is highlighted with a distinctive painted and gilded finish. Known as "demi lune" tables because each table has the shape of a half moon these tables were designed to flank a window or doorway. The three legs have a cylindrical shape with both fluting and spherical sections at the top and base that echo the curved front. Across the entire façade of the apron is a pattern of interlocking circles called "guilloche" and above each leg is a separate section embellished with a fluttering ribbon bow. All of the decorative areas of these antique demi-lune console tables are across the front while the top surfaces were kept simple in order to display objects. The combination of the beautiful aged paint against the lovely simplicity of the shape makes these Swedish tables a handsome addition to an interior.
