A handsome dark cherrywood tilt top wine table from France c. 1860
A handsome dark cherrywood wine table from France c. 1860 having a fully functioning tilt-top with a working leg mechanism that moves 90 degrees to support the table top with four sturdy legs. The planks on the round top are connected with tongue-in-groove joinery and stabilized on the underside with two long pieces of timber. The entire table uses only timber to function - there are no metal hinges or nails to become loose. Only long wood screws are utilized on the underside for their durability. This table was originally used in a vineyard for the workers to bring out when it was time for lunch. Kept stored with the top tilted upright, it takes up very little space, but when folded open, it seats up to six people. The taking of a meal at midday is of prime importance to the French and sitting at a proper table is considered a necessity. The patina of the timber on the top is luscious and continues to provide a tactile pleasure.
