Jacobean Style Oak Table, Limed Finish, England c.1875
Jacobean Style Oak Table, Limed Finish, England c.1875. This table possesses a striking presence as it has its stylistic origins from the Jacobean Period in England (1603-1649) when bold carving and architectural references informed not only interiors but the furnishings within. Each of the end columns on this table have a grand scale as they are each carved from a single block of timber and are fully completed on all sides as the table was always designed to be seen from any direction while giving equal visual punch. The columns are raised upon a scrolled base and connected to the top surface by a similar scrolled section all decorated with deep relief carving. Because the table served many purposes from dining to task work the top boards are smooth and it is possible to see in the photographs the slight undulation in the boards indicative of age and the passage of time. The lime finish applied to the table is an English tradition and effectively fills the open grain of the oak. Originally lime solution was used to give a fresh and light appearance wherever it was used because the only light available came from open fireplaces and candles. The reflective surface achieved by liming remians an extremely popular choice especially when chosen to emphasize the decorative carving seen here.
