Painted Altar Table, Kuang Hsu Period, China circa 1875
Painted Altar Table, Kuang Hsu Period, China c.1875. The combination of carved details highlighted by the original painted and lacquered finish give this table a wonderfully visual appeal. From the region of Shaanxi in southwestern china the table incorporates various carved motifs representing the fountains of water and the beauty of nature symbolized by the two different flower blossoms set below the surface of the table. Each end of the table has a framed cutout that allows light to pass through and the curved profile of the cut echoes the rolling edges of the water motif that frame each vertical support. The use of vibrant pigment to decorate the table was imperative in the nineteenth century as most interiors were dimly lighted and needed potent colour to emphasize the carved details. As the pigment was made of natural ingredients with a limited lifespan the passage of time is quite visible in the faded and muted appearance that is quite desirable today as it provides texture and depth in a modern interior.
