Art Deco Period Burl Walnut, Ebonized Table, France, c. 1930

Art Deco Period Burl Walnut, Ebonized Timber Table, France c.1930. The beautiful balance of the four gently curved legs that rise from the circular base to support the round top of this table is gratifying when viewed from every direction and is enhanced by the contrast between the warm colour of the walnut and the darkest black of the ebonized timber of the legs. Please notice the unusual pattern of the top where the designer of this table chose to lay four matched panels of walnut so the grain meets at a right angle and forms a square. Also the four corners of the square extend slightly beyond the perimetre of the top edge giving the illusion that the square resembles a square of cloth with its corners that hang off the edge of the round top. The strong horizontal line of the walnut grain is contrasted with the monochrome appearance of the four panels of sycamore that fill in the remainder of the top. Both the walnut and sycamore have a warm colour and stand out against the black frame of the table from the edge of the top to the four curved legs to the smaller circular base that stands on the floor. Please notice that the curve of the top edge is a bit sharper than the rounded curve of the edge of the base but that both curves are relational to the curve of each of the four legs. The balance of proportion between all these elements of the table is as crucial to its success as is the combination of the colors. The circular base is further distinguished by the cylindrical centre section that rises from the centre of the base to provide structural solidity to the four legs as well as aopportunity for the warm colour of the walnut to be repeated from the top. This table was always designed with a thought for the impact of its appearance from every direction as it was meant to float within an interior when placed between chairs, beside a sofa or as a centre table.
