Vintage Cherrywood Leather Topped Table, France c.1940
Vintage Cherrywood Leather Topped Table, France c.1940. The handsome octagonal top of this table has been sheathed in leather secured with a pattern of nail heads that give a terrific textural contrast. The base of the table is made of cherrywood and also features an octagonal shape but here the eight sides slope down as they are each set at an angle. The base is raised upon eight spheres that add an air of finished elegance to the table's overall appearance. The top and base are connected by four vertical legs that each have a unique quality-they each possess what is known in architectural terms as "entasis", the slight taper inward at both the top and the bottom of each columnar leg. The ancient Greeks were the first to become aware of the necessity of tapering columns to give them a sense of grace. When columns are constructed with a straight line top to bottom they appear ungainly and clunky. This subtle refinement of line is only seen in superior craftsmanship. The combination of textures and balance of scale give this table its wonderful desirability for use in a well designed interior as it may be seen with equal beauty when viewed from any direction.
