Charles X Period Antique French Game Table circa 1825
The elegant profile of this antique French game table shows its origin in the early nineteenth century during the reign of Charles X (1824-1830). Game tables were an integral element of French interior decoration throughout the 1700 and 1800's as gambling was a massively popular pastime. These tables remain quite useful as they were always made to be easily moved around an interior as needed. The top of this French game table is unusual in that it retains its original tooled leather top with a beautiful patina. The contrast between the mellow colour of the leather and the black of the ebonized border is quite lovely. To use the table for gaming or really for any activity the top half of the top lifts up and is supported by a pull out drawer. Notice how the hollow space of the drawer allows game pieces, cards, scorepads, pens, etc. to be hidden but accessible. When the top is open and laid flat an octagonal surface is revealed lined with green baize, a material whose texture allows cards to be thrown down without sliding, fitted within the mahogany top. The gilded pattern of the baize border on this game table relates to the border of the leather top as well as the gilded bronze collar at the base of the column. Across the front of the table apron are placed a pair of book matched mahogany panels with extravagantly patterned grain. This design detail is part of the overall luxurious harmony seen in this antique game table. The tapered column is also sheathed in the most eye catching mahogany whose swirling grain appears to move as the eye travels around the entire table. The base is particularly important in dating this french game table as the base of the column is encircled with a gilded bronze collar first seen during the Empire period (1804-1820). To support the table the base has four horizontal legs that terminate in a circle with the original casters appearing on the underside. The edge of each leg is defined by a moulded line with a shallow raised cap above each cylindrical end that contains the caster. The restraint exhibited in the design and expert use of lavish materials by the artisan who built this antique game table testifies to its importance in a wealthy household who made use often of its features.
