Art Nouveau Jugendstil Period Mahogany French or German Table circa 1900
The use of inset mother-of-pearl accents as well as the curved base and column variations gives this table its elegant appearance. The large circular top extends well wide of the deep apron and appears to float above the base. The centre column on this Art Nouveau period French or Jugendstil German table has six sides and is tapered in profile while the three outer legs are cylindrical in shape and taper to a base accented with a beaded collar. All of this stands upon a shaped base with three curved outermost points that flow together to form concave sides creating a sense of movement swirling about the table. The table could either be from France or Germany where this "modern" style of furniture was influential in design and a reaction to the earlier Revival styles seen across Europe. The mahogany timber has a beautiful lustre and depth to the grain that adds to the overall appearance. As the table was always designed to be seen with equal allure from every direction it remains perfect for a contemporary interior as it was over a century ago.
