French Art Deco Palisander Table, Inlaid Detail, France, c 1930
This table combines the graphic quality of streamlined Art Deco lines with the intricacy of the finest eighteenth century inlaid furniture ever produced. The bold slant of the three legs enclose two circular sections with the larger area being on top while the smaller circle is set close to the floor. Palisander is a variety of rosewood highly valued by French designers because of the potent visual power of both its grain and colour. In this table the long vertical legs showcase the grain to best advantage while the circular shapes enclose the areas defined by the geometric pattern of the inlay. Please be sure to enlarge and zoom on the imgaes offered to see the marvelous detail of the craftsmanship of this table. Each individual fan shape square was selected because of its pattern and hand applied to each section to create a dazzling display. The designer of this table used the same material, palisander, but the difference in the stained colour heightened the graphic contrast between the legs and round sections at the top and base. No matter from what angle this French Art Deco table is viewed it has an almost sculptural presence in an interior. Perfect as a side table between two chairs or beside a sofa this table may also be used in the French manner and placed in front of a sofa as a drinks table.
