Italian Chasuble Front with Embroidered Threads, 1700's
Settecento Period. Italian circa 1710 – 1750 ecclesiastical chasuble front with intricately embroidered metal and silk threads. A design of cartouche-like shapes outlined in metal thread among a pattern of curling leaves and flowers that are all silk embroidered on cream silk ground. While this pattern is very secular in design it was made specifically for this chasuble due to the very symmetry of the design. Backed with red silk and has the museum stamp of the Longues Sur Mer Museum in Basse-Normandie, France. Size: 38 1/2" x 24" widest These look best when framed and hung.
The silks are in bright fresh condition, wear to the silk cream ground that has worn away in parts revealing the linen ground it was laid upon. The silk lining has come loose in many places and should be replaced.
