French, 19th Century Golden Yellow Provencal Boutis Called Vanne Jaune Raye

French mid-19th century Provencal boutis that brings the summer sun indoors from the glowing golden yellow gros de tours. This weave has alternating narrow and wide sateen stripes that forms the top of this vanne or small bedcover. Woven of fine quality long staple cotton, it has the feel and look of silk. The backing is printed checked brown and white cotton in small scale. Despite the heavier weave of the top the quilt is quite light due to silk batting. Traditional quilting in high relief shows a double line diamond grid in the center with two elaborate leaf swag borders holding an open blossom in each corner. These small quilts are made to rest on top of the bed for decorative effect.
