Pair of Italian Pillows, 16th century, silk lampas with urns and crowns
Pair of Italian pillows, 16th century, blue and yellow silk lampas, an ornately patterned fabric resembling damask, decorated with a repeating pattern of central floral urns and crowns inside curved volutes and branches. This design was derived from an ancient Graeco-Roman motif. Edged with an Italian 18th century handmade torchon multi-colored metal lace, finished with matching 19th century French metal tassels. Backed in blue silk velvet.

CONDITION: This fabric once did duty as dress so it’s had many lives. This accounts for the one edge where it looks like the fabric was once basted. Only one pillow has a few issues, pictured, but retains all silk threads, common to something over 450 years old.
