Vintage Le Boeuf à La Mode Parisian Print
This is a lovely 19th century print of a Boeuf à la Mode, that is, literally a cow in style, or, beef made to the style/ made to order. This expression was introduced to America in the early 1800s; Beef à la Mode, despite being dressed up with a fancy French name, was basically a pot roast cooked with wine. This print is a great little pun on the fine Parisian dish, which was very popular and also, the image represents the mascot of the 18th-century French "Restaurant du Boeuf à la Mode". The cow that is depicted in this drawing is all dressed up with a bonnet and shoes and even a scarf. It is possible this print once hung in the Parisian Restaurant, or perhaps it is a souvenir of this era. Nevertheless, its a fantastic little print, perfect for a Francophile, a cook or a foodie. The print has some visible foxing, which is normal for its age, but overall its a great piece and there are no tears to the paper. There is a numeral hand-written in ink on the top left but this appears to not be an editioned piece. The title of the piece is printing is clear and beautiful vintage script. The print itself is 5-3/4 x 4-1/2 inches, and is mounted, floating, against a soft canvas background and in a box frame. It has been archivally framed, in a nice wooden frame, which measures 12-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches and is 2-1/2 inches deep. Ready for hanging with a wire on the back.
