"Le Roi Marc from Tristan et Iseult" by Salvador Dali, Color Etching, 1970
Salvador Dali depicts his surrealist version of King Mark from the epic medieval poem "Tristan et Iseult" in this color etching from 1970. Seen in profile, the king bears a wondrous crown that features a spotted duck peering over the front. Considered the leader of the Surrealism movement, Spanish artist Salvador Dali (1904-1989) often used literary subjects, from Dante to Don Quixote. This color etching on Arches paper is initialed in pencil on the lower right and blindstamp "OGC" on the lower left. It is set in a white linen mat with gold bevel, with a gold wood frame decorated with golden squares at each corner. Reference: Field 70-10-B, page 60-61.
