Portrait of a Young Man, Vienna, Unsigned
Charcoal drawing heightened with white chalk.
In the 1970s and early 1980s, an Austrian woman had a gallery in Florida, from which she sold works of art, mostly drawings and watercolors, that had come from various artists’ studios in Vienna and which she and her husband had brought with them when they emigrated to the United States. Some of the pieces were signed by Viennese artists from late in the 19th and early in the 20th century, including Ignaz Schônbrunner (1835-1921), Rudolf Hermann (1879-1963), Raphaël Kirchner (1876-1917), and others. Turn-of-the-century Vienna had a vibrant artistic community that produced some of the most important artists of the early 20th century, as well as a host of interesting and accomplished minor ones. This beautifully finished but unsigned drawing represents the polished academic tradition in Viennese art that was later supplanted by more modernist trends.
