Penrhyn Stanlaws (1877-1957) "Marion Davies", from the W.R. Hearst estate, pastel on paper
A fantastic pastel on paper believed to be of Marion Davies by noted American illustrator Penrhyn Stanlaws, commissioned by William Randolph Hearst. Stanlaws did cover illustrations for several important publications from the period including Colliers, the Saturday Evening Post, and other magazines owned by Hearst. The provenance is well documented via the masonite backing of the painting which was obviously used in the shipping of the artwork to and from Hearst and the artist. On one side of the masonite is written Hearst's San Simeon address with the artist's business card taped on as a return address, and on the other side of the board is a label from the offices of WRH with the artist's address typed on it and a value of $500 affixed to it.
The enigmatic subject of the work is completely exposed with the exception of her silver high heels and a mysterious curtain veiling her face and long blond tresses. Rather odd for her face to be concealed and I believe that this was added later per Hearst's request to avoid any potential scandal regarding his famous mistress. The work is very reminiscent of the pin-ups by Alberto Vargas, however, in my opinion, it seems much more sophisticated than most of the 'Vargas girls'. The painting is in its original hand carved frame.
