19th Century Pencil Drawing of Winged Lion Fairy Tale
This is a lovely pencil drawing from the late 1800's that shows two figures in costume, dressed in regal garb for fairy tale incantation. A larger lion faced figure with small dragon wings pouts like a grumpy but loving monster as a young girl smiles and touches him on the arm. Her dress is Victorian and that of a young child ready to play out a fantastical narrative. Both the magical dragon figure and the young girl have soft faces and the sensitivity in the rendering of this drawing make it a really wonderful piece to draw out one's imagination. The fantastical creature with the child perhaps serves as an archetype of the fairy tale narrative; the winged lion creature is representational of the child's fear, as as well as the imagination of childhood. Oscar Wilde once wrote when speaking of fairy tales: "The mind of a child is a great mystery . . . who shall divine it, or bring it its own peculiar delights?". This color pencil drawing is framed in a wonderful antique burl wood frame, accentuating the details in the line work, and the fantastical scenario which is about to unfold. The drawing is in great condition but has slight water marks, which do not affect the image itself and look almost as if part of the original drawing. The drawing measures 7 3/4 by 6 inches and the frame is 10 1/4 by 8 1/4 inches. This drawing makes a wonderful gift for a young person, or for someone whose collection is filled with imaginative objects and loves storytelling.
