Portrait of Young Gentleman, Clemence Andree Lenique de Francheville, pastel on paper
Born in Paris, Mme Lenique de Francheville (1875-1944) was a pupil of Benjamin Constant, Jean-Paul Laurens and Jules Lefebvre. She became a noted artist and portrait painter and in the early 20th century, came to New York, where she lived for many years, becoming a well-known society portrait painter in Newport and Bar Harbor as well as in New York. She painted many luminaries and celebrities. Before moving to New York, she exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Francais, receiving medals in 1889 and 1900. She is listed in the Benezit Dictionary of Painters. The pastel is in a stunning mahogany veneer frame, probably original to the piece, with new museum glass.
