Star Proctor Aquatint Etching by Rosenquist
An aquatint etching by James Rosenquist, an American born modern artist. This piece titled "Star Proctor/ 2nd State", features dada-like imagery from newspaper texts to forks and star explosions. At the center, the fork appears as both etched in black and a little to the right it is embossed, as if it floats, ghost-like in its appearance. The three main shapes appear as accidental cut-outs. They create both negative and positive space, making the perspective shift, never letting your eyes rest on one single element. As the title suggest, this piece of modern art is somewhat galactic, an in-between star, a shape shifter that makes the eye and the mind wander simultaneously. The work on paper is signed and dated on the lower right, and on the lower left corner it is numbered as edition 65/78, and its title is hand-written and noted. This piece dates to 1978, the same year that Rosenquist exhibited at the 38th Venice Biennale, Italy. Rosenquist's work is part of numerous collections in the US and Internationally. In his work he often incorporates illusionistic painting techniques with fragmented advertising imagery. The etching has been professionally and archivally mounted with a acid free matte and a black frame that complements the piece nicely. Works well in a public and private space, in the home or the office. The print measures 22.5 by 40 inches. Framed, the piece measures 27 by 44 inches and a little over 1 inch deep.
