"Danae" Original Etching After Rembrandt van Rijn, 1879
An original copper plate engraving on laid paper possessing large watermark after Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn's (1606-1669), painting "Danae" which currently hangs in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. This wonderfully executed engraving from 1879 was engraved by French artist Léopold Flameng (1831-1911). Sheet Size: 8.25" x 8.25". Image size: 5.5" x 6.25".
Rembrandt was a 17th century painter and etcher whose work came to dominate what has since been named the Dutch Golden Age. One of the most revered artists of all time, Rembrandt's greatest creative triumphs are seen in his portraits of his contemporaries, illustrations of biblical scenes and self-portraits as well as his innovative etchings and use of shadow and light.
Léopold Flameng (Brussels 22 November 1831 – September 1911) was a French engraver, illustrator and painter. He was also the illustrator in the 1868 Revised edition of Picciola by Xavier Boniface Saintine published after his death in 1865.
This engraving was published by Gazette des Beaux-Arts. The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002.
