Gondola Scene Engraving by Giacomo Franco (1550–1620)
This is a beautiful early 17th Century Italian engraving of a young and recently married couple on a gondola. The etching is by Giacomo Franco (1550–1620), a Venetian artist who was known as a publisher and a skilled draughtsmanship and engraver. His works most often portrayed local traditional scenes of Italian life. He became famous in 1586 for his print of The Miraculous Virgin of Treviso, and after than his work was in high demand. This picture presents two men rowing a gondola, and the wedding party sitting in the interior compartment. In Venice it was typical to go off on a gondola ride after the marriage ceremony. "A questo modo vano le novizze in gondola" is the old italian text inscribed above the image. It is carefully handwritten and appears to hover the subject of the scene as if implying a warning, or a proverb of Italian descent. The engraving measures 4 x 4 1/2 inches and is mounted and framed by delicately hand drawn ink lines. The engraving is framed in a 9 x 10 inch burl wood frame which adds to the genuine treasure that is this work of art. The artist's signature is at the bottom right of the engraving- Franco F (Giacomo Franco Forma was his full name). The bottom line that frames the image appears worn, but other than that the engraving is in great condition, especially for its age. Franco's work can be found in special collections around Italy as well as the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
