Karl Blossfeldt Photogravure: Equisetum Hiemale

Equisetum Hiemale, by Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932). A beautiful book plate of a photo gravure by the German photographer Karl Blossfeldt, from his book titled "Wunder in der Natur" / Magic in Nature (1942). In the 1890s he took on the job of documenting botanical specimens at the cutting edge Kunstgewerbeschule (The Royal School of Arts and Crafts) in Berlin and it was here that he developed his interest in the natural forms. Originally he was interested in a closer look that allowed for the forms and patterns he discovered in the natural world to be isolated and developed into abstract forms. The philosopher Walter Benjamin praised Blossfeldt for his playing a part in "that great examination of the inventory of perception, which will have an unforeseeable effect on our conception of the world". He continued to photograph plants for the remainder of his life and career. In the 1920s Blossfeldt began to exhibit his works in art galleries and he published the first of his three photography books Art Forms in Nature (1928). A descendent of printmaking, the photogravure printing process was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s and used as a photomechanical means for reproducing images in large editions. Photogravures utilize a copper plate, and this plate goes through several processes that involve potassium bichromate, exposure to light, acid etc., The result provides an almost velvety appearance to the image. These organic botanical forms appear almost ghostlike on the page, hinting at surrealism and abstraction. Each bookplate image is 8 x 10 inches, and is archivally mounted. The matt has an opening of 9 x 11. The book plates can be framed in a black or white 3/4 inch frame of your choosing. The framed works are 17 1/4 x 21 1/4 inches. Without the frame the book plate mounted on the matt board is $50 off the listed price of $250.
