"Sliced Watermelon" by Tomoe Yokoi, Mezzotint Etching, c. 1985
Japanese artist Tomoe Yokoi renders two lush watermelons slices, sitting on a cutting board, in this delicate etching from the mid-1980s. Mezzotint, a process similar to intaglio etching, allows for subtle tones and variations, as one can see in the shadowing on the surfaces of the tiles. Yokoi is a master of mezzotint, taking this medium to a new level with how she captures subtle differences in tones and colors. This mezzotint on BFK Rives is signed in pencil, set in a white mat and a silver wood frame.
